This is a snapshot of a heartwarming conversation with a good friend I met in the pandemic. You can find this #podcast episode link below. I never believed in Serendipity until I met my wise resrouceful owl friend. Sofia is someone I can turn to in a pinch and for a laugh. She is tough and soft at the same time. She says what needs to be said and walks through silence with grace.
She also speaks with her hands. She has mastered the art of the #pupusa and she can crochet you a soft bunker until the apocalypse come. And on top of all that, she is a publishing house and creative mentorship called Mending Roots Healing Spaces where she wrote 30+ books and journals for mindfulness and self-compassion. You can find Sofia on IG:mendingrootshealingspaces

Hi and welcome to confetti all around a podcast hosted by rooted in reflection my name is Cynthia Perez and I'm so excited you know we started laughing because I asked her.... this is my friend Sofia Mendoza, l c s w m ; i'm going to introduce her but we're laughing because i asked her hey underneath this camera "do you have a blanket too because i feel like that's such a Latina thing" and so she shows me and so she's knitting
and so she says you.... what?
Sofia: crochet don't get a twist is to
Cynthia: okay you'll have to teach me you'll have to tell me you're right don't get it twisted. So she's like yeah i crochet in the meetings at work and i was like that was so funny you know by next year you'll just have like knitted yourself a cocoon and then she shows me how big it is and i was like "oh you took creating softness in your life literally look at you creating softness" so with that sophia tell us about yourself introduce yourself all the roles and hats that you wear....
Sofia: oh my gosh we'll do a few i'm a social worker here in Long Beach specializing in mental health and one of my roles is I work in a community in community mental health and a local agency here but i also have you know small private practise kind of dedicated toward to first gen lots of helping professionals, I'm a creator, a craftor.
"I help the helpers you know? i'm also a mom to an only child ; an eight year old she's going to be nine soon, i'm a daughter of an immigrant , i'm a creator i'm a crafter"
Sofia is a therapist and also an author by trade and creative outlet. I found her work by chance when I went to Etsy.com looking for some #socialwork worksheets. I found her "Valued Living Starterkit" for under $10 and loved the content and how it opend up connection between myself and my collagues. I started hosting 10minute refreshers before our interdisciplanry meetings. We got to re-align with our values after a long week with patients.
Sofia: I think in this season I have kind of labelled them as it's a little bit of everything like i they're journals, they're work books, they're reflection journals with prompts, they're work books with mental health themes but then also i have um stationary mental health related stationary of just what i want to be carrying around you know and so some of my the note books that that are just now blank notebooks inside um they'll have something related to you know like like my heritage you know because i want to see that as i'm carrying it around you know or there's a phrase about you know resilience or something like that or gratitude.
Sofia: a friend said you have a publishing house because I have twenty nine of them now ; i'm working on number thirty right now. It's been a really fun project because it helps me like this i consider it a creative endeavor but then also a professional one because it does help me with my work down the line you know because i'm able to give it to my clients.
Sofia and I then happened to be in the same Facebook Buy Nothing mirconeighborhood group. We realized we were both #Latinatherapists and we found comfort in our collective purpose to spread joy during so much uncertainity during the Spring of 2020. Sofia and I talk about the spirit of reciprocity:
Sofia: we're working from home I was and it's like one frustrating thing and then I get to open the the group and to finally be able to relate and laugh you know and some of the stuff that's out there you know um ah it was...
I also had to work on my boundaries, did you? Because sometimes with people like saying they're going to pick something up and then they're not it was really in the moment time or like you can't , you can't just take something off my porch so it was really a moment to practice good boundaries, I thought
Yeah that's true that's well and and to me it was a good moment to practice boundaries but also outline them right like um someone's asking for eggs i have a dozen eggs i'm not going to give them all you know i will give half
i love that
"Don't give more than what you can and and then also don't take more than what you need" you know that you know i have to credit Braiding Sweetgrass the book that's that's where she talks about this like um this law of reciprocity with nature and never take more than what you need um but but um never take more than what you need and don't give more than you can give kind of thing
oh i love that yeah that falls nicely. i love that and yeah i am with you, i found abundance i found you and i can chat and it's like there's never enough time Sofia. I feel like two niñas in a sleep over like we just like that but the depth of our conversation is something that is so beautiful.
